Handy Mac software
A few days onwards with my spiffy new macbook, I’ve discovered a lot of useful tools:
Freeware apps:
- Adium: IM client
- Chmox: CHM Viewer
- ClearDock: changes/removes your dock background
- coconutBattery: extensive battery information
- coconutWiFi: detects (open) wifi networks and shows it in the menu bar
- Growl!: notification system
- iCyclone: fan controller
- iStumbler: network stumbling tool
- iTerm: the terminal redefined
- KisMAC: Wireless Network Stumbler
- Monolingual: Delete unneccesary languages
- NeoOffice: Office suite for Mac (based on OpenOffice)
- OnyX: System maintenance
- Remote Desktop Connection: RDP client (for Windows Terminal Services)
- Smcfancontrol: temperature menulet and fan control
- Sidenote: notes
- StuffIT! Expander: archive extractor
- The Unarchiver: archive extractor
- uApp: uninstaller (removes prefs, … too)
- UnrarX: RAR extractor
- VLC media player: media player
- witch: Window switcher (not just app switching)
- Xfolders: file manager
- XMeeting: SIP/H.323 video conferencing client
Non-free software:
- MenuCalendarClock: unfolding menulet calendar with iCal integration

Plugins:
- Flip4mac WMV: wmv plugin for QuickTime
Preferences:
- StartupSound.prefPane: to get rid of that (annoying?) sound when you start your Mac
Widgets:
- App Update: shows if there are updates for apps
- iStat Pro: hardware stats
